Yosemite and Vegas

Had a blast over the 4th of July weekend. Had perfect friends, perfect company, perfect place and surprisingly some beautiful pictures from my SLR. Yosemite was really beautiful during that weekend and we could see a lot of waterfalls.

Had gone to Vegas and stayed for a couple of days this week. It was an official trip. I will never forget the upgrade to a Prima suite in the Venetian. http://www.venetian.com/Las-Vegas-Accommodations/Las-Vegas-Suites/Prima-Suite/. Never had such a good place to stay during an official trip. If only it wasn't Southwest, but a business class in United, I would have been happier. Greedy me!!

Mumbai blasts

If I had the right to, I would condemn the Mumbai blasts.

By far, I have always stayed away from discussing social and political issues related to India on Facebook, twitter, blogs or other social networks. Not because I lack the knowledge, aptitude or intent to do so. But mostly because I am a utilitarian. I do not believe my comments, without any actions or rationality will do any greater good. While I do not employ these utilitarian values for everything I undertake, I definitely feel a responsibility to do so for issues that concern everyone.

Hence I am disturbed by my friends and acquaintances posting irrational and irresponsible comments without any proper basis. I am OK with people posting updates and feeds about the latest events related to the blasts. But beyond that - they must stop. Using Facebook/Twitter to express resentment or dissent and solicit equally infuriating comments is one of the major drawbacks of such mass and accessible networks - because of the viral potential of such emotions amongst easily influential people.

I am from Bombay and I understand how most of who commented are also native to that city. What disturbs me though is that those very people left their city and settled thousands of miles away to follow their dreams, goals, ambitions and lead a better life. Nomadic and situational patriotism bothers me. I am sure none of them are activists. None of them have ever engaged in any form of selfless goodwill or charity. The ease with which they talk about such huge issues is the same ease with which they forget and move on with their lives.

I understand there has to be freedom of speech - without activism. I understand there needs to be utilitarianism that does not need to be applied to every situation. But I also know that there needs to be humility and self-righteousness in all your actions.
